My father's been an active fire chief for forty-five years and frequently been on the news or in the paper. Most of the write-ups have left my daughter unimpressed. Recently, though, a zealous reporter researched our family history and wrote a human interest piece on him that included the surprising tidbit that one of his female relatives was rumored to have been a vampire. This piece is cherished by my sixteen-year-old and earned her immediate celebrity status among her friends. Go figure.

When my children were young, I learned (when construction on the road outside my home went on for two months) that repetitive noise can destroy my nerves. I used to show up for church meetings one hour early just to sit in the silence and learned that that auditory steambath could cure a host of nervous ills. Long baths with the lights off and talk radio or escape to the public library reading room or ear plugs for one hour can go a long way toward keeping one's sanity. I believe in it so much that in my job as a YMCA wellness coach, I instituted a quiet zone in our smaller workout room - no music, no radio. People love it.

I should think an author might be flattered that other people spin stories about their characters, as though they were real people. I met a man, recently, who seemed to be the embodiment of Holden Caulfield. The man is in his late fifties and I thought it would be interesting to read a story based on Holden at that age. But, then I read a news item about J.D.Salinger suing a writer for doing just that so, obviously, he did not feel flatttered. :)

Hey Brandy,

So random. I just popped onto your blog for the first time in a while and was thrilled to read a post that brought me back to my college days =) GREAT TIMES in Lynchburg for sure. Matt and I always went to Tokyo's on Timberlake (just like Osakas). We go there every time we visit and wish there was a place like that here in DE.

I agree, Lynchburg will always be like a second home!!

Take Care,

I always get nervous when people ask me what I'm reading. There's always a stack by my bed, another stack by my chair, a book in my car and some in my bag for work! There's research, there's what I want to read, what catches my eye and what is a must read. I'm finishing Vanish by Tom Pawlik, I'm reading several books on creative journaling for a class I'm teaching, I'm reading some classics because I've assigned them to my homeschooling daughter and I'm reading Mysteries of the Middle Ages in prep for a Celtic novel I'd like to write. I've read less than usual this summer because I was finishing my first novel. My mantra has been "You can read a book or you can write a book - which will it be?" I'm happy to have completed the writing. I can take a break to read without guilt!

Reading is a way to escape from life. I'm not saying life is boring or tiring, but there are times when you just want to imagine, create, have fun, that's what books are for (not all of them are).
I like reading quite a lot, I enjoy reading about someone's life, even if it's just a fictional character, it's a way to learn about other points of view.
I write poems and I'm currently working on a novel, since I want to make people get these small moments of 'freedom' from the daily life.
I admire writers just like J.K. Rowling since they are able to make others get into their stories making their characters, plot, setting 'come to life'.
I wish that one day I'll be able to get people to like what I write.
Take care, nice blog,
